There are only a handful of games left in the 2026 MLB regular season, and while six teams have already clinched postseason berths, almost nothing is completely settled when it comes to October seeding.

The National League is relatively straightforward: Milwaukee, Los Angeles and Atlanta have won their divisions, while Chicago, San Diego and Philadelphia are fighting for the three Wild Card spots.

The American League is where things get wild.

The AL Central is separated by just one game. The AL West is separated by one game. And the race for the final Wild Card spot is still alive.

In other words, the final week could completely reshape the October bracket.

As of Sept. 21, the six teams that have officially clinched playoff berths are the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox.

First, how the MLB postseason bracket works

The 12-team playoff format sends six teams from each league to October:

  • Three division winners
  • Three Wild Card teams
  • The two division winners with the best records receive first-round byes
  • The remaining four teams play in the Wild Card Series
  • Wild Card Series are best-of-three
  • Division Series are best-of-five

The 2026 Wild Card Series begin Sept. 29, with the Division Series beginning Oct. 3.

The key point: finishing first in a division doesn’t automatically guarantee a bye. The two division winners with the best records in each league receive the byes.

THE CURRENT BRACKET

If the season ended today, the matchups would be:

American League

No. 6 Chicago White Sox at No. 3 Texas Rangers

No. 5 Boston Red Sox at No. 4 New York Yankees

The winners would advance to face:

  • No. 6/3 winner vs. No. 2 Cleveland Guardians
  • No. 5/4 winner vs. No. 1 Tampa Bay Rays

National League

No. 6 Philadelphia Phillies at No. 3 Atlanta Braves

No. 5 San Diego Padres at No. 4 Chicago Cubs

The winners would advance to face:

  • No. 6/3 winner vs. No. 2 Los Angeles Dodgers
  • No. 5/4 winner vs. No. 1 Milwaukee Brewers

That is the bracket entering the final week, but there are plenty of ways it can change.

AMERICAN LEAGUE: THE RACE THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING

The current AL standings are:

AL East

  • Rays: 95-60
  • Yankees: 89-66
  • Red Sox: 84-72

AL Central

  • Guardians: 81-75
  • White Sox: 80-76

AL West

  • Rangers: 78-78
  • Astros: 77-79

The Yankees and Red Sox have already clinched postseason spots, but the Central and West are still unresolved.

And that matters because the division winners get the higher seeds, while the three Wild Cards fill the remaining spots.

SCENARIO 1: TAMPA BAY WINS THE AL EAST

This is the most straightforward scenario.

The Rays enter the final week with a 95-60 record and a six-game lead over New York. They also have the best record in the American League.

Tampa Bay is scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Yankees on Tuesday before finishing the season against Philadelphia.

The Rays currently hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over New York, although MLB notes that the Yankees could change that by sweeping the remaining series.

If Tampa Bay wins the division, the Rays remain in position for the No. 1 AL seed and first-round bye.

That would leave the Yankees and Red Sox fighting for Wild Card positioning.

SCENARIO 2: THE YANKEES ACTUALLY CATCH TAMPA BAY

New York is six games behind Tampa Bay with seven games remaining.

So the Yankees have a narrow mathematical path to the division.

Essentially, New York needs to make up the entire six-game deficit over the final week.

The two teams also play each other four more times, making that series particularly important.

The Yankees currently hold a 3-6 record against Tampa Bay, meaning the Rays own the tiebreaker at the moment. A four-game Yankees sweep would change that.

If New York somehow wins the AL East, the Yankees would move into the division-winner portion of the bracket and Tampa Bay would become a Wild Card team.

That would dramatically alter the entire AL bracket.

THE AL CENTRAL: CLEVELAND VS. CHICAGO

This is one of the most important races of the final week.

The Guardians enter the week 81-75, just one game ahead of the White Sox at 80-76.

But here’s the important part:

Chicago owns the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The White Sox won the season series 7-6. Therefore, Cleveland must finish with a better record than Chicago to win the division.

That makes the final six games extremely important.

Cleveland’s remaining schedule

  • 3 at Boston
  • 3 at Kansas City

Chicago’s remaining schedule

  • 3 at Kansas City
  • 3 vs. Colorado

The Guardians have been one of baseball’s hottest teams since Aug. 20, going 20-9, tied with Milwaukee for the best record in MLB during that span. Chicago is 14-16 over the same period.

SCENARIO 3: CLEVELAND WINS THE AL CENTRAL

If Cleveland finishes ahead of Chicago, the Guardians win the division.

That would give them at least the No. 2 seed and potentially the No. 1 seed depending on what happens with Tampa Bay.

Currently, Cleveland has the second-best record among AL division leaders.

If Cleveland wins the Central and Tampa Bay remains ahead of it, Cleveland gets the No. 2 seed and a bye.

The Wild Card field would then include the Yankees, Red Sox and the best remaining team among Chicago, Texas, Houston and Toronto.

SCENARIO 4: CHICAGO WINS THE AL CENTRAL

This is where the tiebreaker becomes huge.

Because Chicago owns the season-series tiebreaker, a tie between Cleveland and Chicago would give the division to the White Sox.

MLB specifically notes that if both teams finish 4-2, for example, Cleveland maintains its one-game lead and wins the division. But if Chicago goes 5-1 while Cleveland goes 4-2, the teams finish tied and Chicago wins the division via the tiebreaker.

If Chicago wins the Central, Cleveland would fall into the Wild Card race.

That could potentially create an AL postseason field containing:

  • Rays
  • Yankees
  • Red Sox
  • White Sox
  • Rangers/Astros
  • Guardians

The exact seeding would depend on the final records.

THE AL WEST: RANGERS VS. ASTROS

This might be the most fascinating race in the American League because the Astros have the tiebreaker.

Texas enters at 78-78, one game ahead of Houston at 77-79.

But Houston won the season series against Texas.

That means if the two teams finish with identical records, Houston wins the AL West.

Texas’ remaining schedule

  • 3 vs. Mets
  • 3 at Minnesota

Houston’s remaining schedule

  • 2 at Seattle
  • 4 at Athletics

Houston therefore doesn’t necessarily need to finish ahead of Texas in the standings.

The Astros simply need to finish tied with the Rangers.

That makes every Rangers loss particularly important.

SCENARIO 5: TEXAS WINS THE AL WEST

If Texas finishes ahead of Houston, the Rangers win the division.

That would give Texas the No. 3 seed unless it somehow overtakes Cleveland for the No. 2 position.

Houston would then have to fight for a Wild Card.

The problem for Houston is that the White Sox currently have a three-game cushion over the final Wild Card spot.

MLB currently lists Chicago three games ahead of Toronto and Houston for that final AL playoff position.

SCENARIO 6: HOUSTON WINS THE AL WEST

If Houston catches Texas — or ties Texas and wins the tiebreaker — the Astros become the AL West champion.

That would push Texas into the Wild Card race.

And this is where things get extremely complicated.

The AL could potentially have Cleveland, Chicago, Texas and Houston all fighting for three remaining playoff positions, depending on how the Central and Wild Card races finish.

Houston’s final six games are particularly interesting because four come against the Athletics.

However, Houston enters the final week having lost 10 of its last 14 games, according to MLB.

THE FINAL AL WILD CARD

The Yankees and Red Sox have already secured two of the three Wild Card spots unless one of them wins its division.

The current battle for the final spot is primarily:

White Sox vs. Blue Jays vs. Astros vs. Rangers/Guardians depending on the division races.

Chicago has the current advantage at 80-76.

Toronto and Houston are both 77-79.

MLB notes that Chicago owns the tiebreaker over Toronto, while Houston owns the tiebreaker over Chicago.

That means the final AL Wild Card could come down to both record and head-to-head mathematics.

NOW TO THE NATIONAL LEAGUE

The NL is much more straightforward.

The division winners are already set:

NL East

Atlanta Braves

NL Central

Milwaukee Brewers

NL West

Los Angeles Dodgers

The remaining playoff race is:

Cubs, Padres, Phillies and Diamondbacks.

Milwaukee currently has the best NL record at 98-58, followed by the Dodgers at 96-60 and Braves at 92-64.

SCENARIO 7: MILWAUKEE GETS THE NL’S NO. 1 SEED

The Brewers have already clinched the NL Central and enter the week with baseball’s best record.

Milwaukee set a franchise record with its 98th win Sunday.

The Brewers currently have a two-game advantage over the Dodgers for the best record in the NL.

If Milwaukee finishes with the best record, the Brewers get the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye.

SCENARIO 8: THE DODGERS TAKE THE NL’S NO. 1 SEED

The Dodgers are only two games behind Milwaukee.

Los Angeles has already won the NL West, so its only remaining objective is improving its overall record.

If Los Angeles finishes with a better record than Milwaukee, the Dodgers take the No. 1 seed.

The Brewers would become No. 2.

The Dodgers currently own the head-to-head tiebreaker disadvantage against Milwaukee, however, so a tie would favor Milwaukee.

SCENARIO 9: ATLANTA JUMPS INTO THE TOP TWO

The Braves are four games behind the Dodgers.

Atlanta has already clinched the NL East and finished the regular season series against Philadelphia with a 9-4 advantage, which also gives Atlanta the tiebreaker over the Phillies.

Atlanta would need a huge final week to move into the top two.

But mathematically, the Braves can still finish with one of the two best records in the NL.

If that happens, Atlanta would receive a bye instead of playing in the Wild Card round.

Otherwise, the Braves are the No. 3 seed and host a Wild Card Series.

THE NL WILD CARD RACE

This is where Phillies fans need to pay attention.

Current records:

  • Cubs: 87-69
  • Padres: 87-69
  • Phillies: 86-70
  • Diamondbacks: 82-74

The Phillies are only one game behind Chicago and San Diego for the top two Wild Card positions.

Arizona is four games behind Philadelphia for the final Wild Card spot.

SCENARIO 10: THE PHILLIES FINISH AS THE NO. 4 SEED

If Philadelphia finishes ahead of both Chicago and San Diego, the Phillies would become the top Wild Card team.

That means:

Phillies host the No. 5 Wild Card team.

This is potentially a major difference from the current bracket.

Instead of traveling to Atlanta, Philadelphia would host a Wild Card Series at Citizens Bank Park.

The No. 4 Wild Card seed gets home-field advantage in the Wild Card round.

SCENARIO 11: PHILLIES FINISH NO. 5

If Philadelphia finishes behind one of the Cubs or Padres but ahead of the other, the Phillies become the No. 5 seed.

They would then travel to the No. 4 seed for the Wild Card Series.

The current No. 4 team is Chicago.

But San Diego could move into that position.

So a Phillies Wild Card matchup could potentially be:

Phillies at Cubs

or

Phillies at Padres

depending on the final standings.

SCENARIO 12: PHILLIES FINISH NO. 6

If both Chicago and San Diego finish ahead of Philadelphia, the Phillies would be the No. 6 seed.

That would mean:

Phillies at Atlanta

because Atlanta is the No. 3 seed.

That is the current projected matchup.

The Phillies would then need to win a road best-of-three series to advance to the NLDS.

THE CUBS HAVE A MASSIVE ADVANTAGE

Chicago’s biggest weapon isn’t necessarily its one-game lead.

It’s the tiebreakers.

The Cubs are 6-1 against Philadelphia this season and 5-1 against San Diego.

Therefore, Chicago owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against both teams.

That means if Chicago, Philadelphia and San Diego all finish with the same record, Chicago has the mathematical advantage in the three-team Wild Card race.

The Cubs are currently one win away from clinching a postseason berth.

SAN DIEGO HAS THE MOST INTERESTING FINAL SERIES

The Padres finish the season against Arizona.

That’s important because the Diamondbacks are the team trying to chase San Diego down.

San Diego currently has a four-game lead over Arizona for the final NL Wild Card position, although Philadelphia sits four games ahead of Arizona as well.

The Padres and Diamondbacks will play their final three games at Petco Park.

There’s also an important tiebreaker wrinkle:

San Diego and Arizona are currently 5-5 against each other, meaning their final series can determine the head-to-head tiebreaker.

SCENARIO 13: ARIZONA MAKES A CRAZY COMEBACK

Arizona is four games behind Philadelphia with six games remaining.

The Diamondbacks essentially need to win almost everything and hope Philadelphia collapses.

Their final series against San Diego could be enormous.

If Arizona catches Philadelphia and San Diego, the Wild Card picture could completely change.

The Diamondbacks already hold the tiebreaker over the Cubs but currently have unresolved tiebreakers against San Diego and Philadelphia.

So Arizona isn’t eliminated from the equation.

But the margin for error is extremely small.

THE MOST IMPORTANT NL TIEBREAKERS

Here’s the cheat sheet:

Cubs

  • Beat Padres in tiebreaker
  • Beat Phillies in tiebreaker
  • Beat Diamondbacks in tiebreaker

Phillies

  • Beat Padres in tiebreaker
  • Lose to Cubs
  • Tiebreaker with Arizona still unresolved

Padres

  • Lose to Cubs
  • Lose to Phillies
  • Tiebreaker with Arizona still unresolved

Diamondbacks

  • Lose to Cubs
  • Tiebreaker with Phillies unresolved
  • Tiebreaker with Padres unresolved

This means the standings aren’t the only thing worth watching.

Head-to-head records could decide the final seeds.

WHAT COULD THE NLDS LOOK LIKE?

There are several possibilities.

If the current standings hold:

NLDS 1

Phillies/Braves winner vs. Dodgers

NLDS 2

Padres/Cubs winner vs. Brewers

But if Philadelphia moves into the top Wild Card position, it would host its Wild Card Series instead.

And if the Padres or Cubs move into the top Wild Card position, the matchups change accordingly.

The important thing is that the No. 3 division winner always hosts the No. 6 Wild Card team, while the No. 4 and No. 5 Wild Card teams play each other.

THE BIGGEST STORYLINES TO WATCH THIS WEEK

1. Can the Phillies get home-field advantage?

Philadelphia is one game behind Chicago and San Diego.

The difference between finishing No. 4 and No. 6 is enormous.

No. 4 means hosting a Wild Card Series.

No. 6 means traveling to the No. 3 seed.

For a Phillies team that is currently 86-70, every remaining game carries major postseason implications.

2. Can Houston steal the AL West?

The Astros are only one game behind Texas and own the tiebreaker.

Houston doesn’t necessarily need to finish ahead of Texas.

A tie is enough.

3. Can Cleveland hold off Chicago?

The Guardians lead by one game but don’t own the tiebreaker.

Chicago wins the division if the teams finish tied.

4. Can Arizona pull off the comeback?

Four games isn’t much with six games remaining — but it’s a massive deficit when you’re chasing three teams.

5. Brewers vs. Dodgers for the NL’s top seed

Milwaukee has a two-game lead over Los Angeles.

The difference is significant because the No. 1 seed gets the more favorable side of the NL bracket and home-field advantage through the postseason.

6. Can Atlanta sneak into a bye?

The Braves are four games behind Los Angeles.

It’s unlikely to be settled until the final few days whether Atlanta has any chance of moving into the top two.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The 2026 MLB postseason field is starting to take shape, but the bracket is far from finalized.

Six teams have clinched.

Six spots remain.

In the National League, the biggest questions are Wild Card seeding and the Brewers-Dodgers battle for the top seed.

In the American League, there is significantly more chaos:

Guardians vs. White Sox.

Rangers vs. Astros.

White Sox vs. Blue Jays vs. Astros for the final Wild Card.

And potentially, even the Yankees’ position could change if Tampa Bay somehow gets caught.

For Phillies fans, the biggest number to watch is simple:

One.

That’s the current distance between Philadelphia and both Chicago and San Diego for the top two NL Wild Card positions.

The Phillies aren’t just playing for a playoff spot anymore.

They’re playing for where they get to play in October.

And with only a handful of games remaining, one hot streak — or one collapse — could completely rewrite the bracket.

October baseball is officially almost here.
