Dianna Russini could be making her return to the sports media world as soon as next week, and several potential opportunities are already beginning to emerge.
According to a new report from Front Office Sports, the former NFL insider for The Athletic is preparing to launch new sports content just months after resigning from the publication following controversy surrounding her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.
Russini’s potential comeback could involve a partnership with sports betting companies, with Jake Paul’s Betr platform and offshore sportsbook BetUS reportedly among the companies she has held discussions with. She has also reportedly spoken with iHeartMedia about potential opportunities.
One of the biggest clues surrounding her return is a newly created X account called “Russini Report.” The account, which was created in October, indicates plans for a live Wednesday show covering professional football news, injuries, and analysis.
The account previously included language suggesting the show would be powered by BetUS, although that wording has since been removed.
Another possibility is a digital show of her own. Page Six previously reported that Russini would be headlining a new program on a digital platform, with sources indicating that the project had been in the works for some time.
There are also some familiar faces who could potentially welcome her back. iHeart personality Jon “Stugotz” Weiner has previously expressed interest in working with Russini again. She was a frequent guest on his former show, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, and appeared alongside him during Super Bowl week earlier this year.
However, not every potential landing spot is available. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy recently confirmed that Russini would not be joining Barstool. Meanwhile, Kalshi, Underdog, and FanDuel are reportedly not currently in the running to sponsor her content.
The Controversy Behind Her Departure
Russini’s departure from The Athletic followed the publication of photographs showing her with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at an adults-only resort in Arizona in April.
Both Russini and Vrabel issued statements describing their relationship as platonic. Russini resigned from The Athletic approximately a week after the photographs became public.
The Athletic later conducted an internal investigation, which concluded that Russini should have disclosed the nature of her relationship with Vrabel so editors could evaluate potential conflicts of interest.
The investigation did not attempt to determine whether the relationship was romantic. It ultimately recommended adding editorial notes to three videos and one story in which Russini covered Vrabel.
Can Russini Rebuild Her NFL Insider Credibility?
Perhaps the biggest question surrounding Russini’s return isn’t where she will work, but whether she can regain the access and credibility that made her one of the more recognizable NFL insiders in the industry.
One source told Front Office Sports that Russini is expected to lean heavily into her NFL insider role. However, questions remain about how much cooperation she will receive from players, coaches, and the league itself.
With the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl approaching, the timing of her potential return is significant. Landing one major breaking-news story could go a long way toward reestablishing her reputation as a prominent NFL newsbreaker.
Russini has spent years building relationships and connections throughout the league. Whether those relationships remain intact will likely determine how successful her next chapter in sports media becomes.
For now, her comeback appears to be approaching, but the details of her next deal and the platform she ultimately chooses remain unconfirmed.
