Kylian Mbappé is used to having defenders chasing him on a soccer field.

Apparently, some people wanted to chase him off it.

French authorities are investigating an alleged criminal organization that reportedly had Real Madrid and France superstar Kylian Mbappé on a list of potential kidnapping targets.

But before the internet turns this into “Mbappé was almost kidnapped,” there’s an important distinction: Mbappé was reportedly the subject of a kidnapping plan, but there is no indication that he was actually abducted or that the suspects carried out an attempt against him.

According to French newspaper Le Parisien, investigators uncovered the alleged plot while investigating a series of robberies, home invasions and kidnapping plans in France.

An 18-Year-Old Allegedly Running the Operation

At the center of the investigation is 18-year-old Clément L., who authorities suspect was directing a criminal group.

Clément L. was placed under investigation in Nanterre on August 21, 2026, alongside an alleged accomplice. He was already in custody in connection with serious criminal allegations when investigators uncovered information connecting him to additional crimes and kidnapping plans.

Investigators believe the group was involved in a series of criminal activities between April 11 and August 19, 2026, including planned or attempted attacks in several French locations.

And that’s where things get particularly bizarre.

Mbappé Wasn’t the Only Target

According to Le Parisien, investigators found evidence suggesting that the group had identified 26 potential targets.

The list reportedly included wealthy business owners, athletes, rappers and other public figures.

And among those names was Mbappé.

Investigators reportedly categorized the soccer superstar as a particularly wealthy target, which presumably made him attractive to criminals looking for a massive payday.

The alleged plan was to target Mbappé when he was in the Paris area.

Again, there is currently no evidence that the group successfully approached Mbappé or carried out a kidnapping attempt against him. The reporting describes him as one of the intended targets of an alleged plot.

How Did Police Discover It?

The investigation reportedly began with a bizarre attempted robbery involving a watchmaker in Neuilly-sur-Seine.

On April 25, three men allegedly disguised themselves as delivery workers and went to the watchmaker’s home.

The intended victim reportedly became suspicious and contacted authorities, causing the suspects to flee.

Then, on May 4, the same watchmaker’s business was reportedly robbed.

Two armed men allegedly stole 11 luxury watches worth approximately €150,000.

Investigators subsequently found fingerprints on a box that had been left behind during the earlier incident. Those fingerprints reportedly helped investigators identify suspects and eventually uncover the broader criminal operation.

The Alleged Leader Was Already Behind Bars

Perhaps the strangest part of the story is that investigators believe Clément L. was able to remain involved in the alleged criminal activity while incarcerated.

French media reports say he used phones and communications from prison to maintain contact with people outside.

Authorities ultimately found information on seized phones that reportedly included the addresses of potential targets — including Mbappé and other wealthy or famous individuals.

Clément L. has denied being the mastermind behind all of the alleged crimes.

According to reporting, he has acknowledged knowing that the activity was illegal but has attempted to characterize his role as being more of an intermediary rather than the person directing everything.

Mbappé Has Not Been Reported Injured

For Mbappé, the biggest takeaway is that he was reportedly identified as a potential target, not a victim.

There has been no credible reporting that he was kidnapped, physically attacked, or confronted by the suspects.

Clément L. remains in custody and has been placed in isolation while the investigation continues. An alleged accomplice was reportedly released under judicial supervision.

And because this remains an active criminal investigation, allegations against the suspects should not be treated as proven facts.

From Soccer Superstar to Kidnapping Target

It’s a disturbing reminder of one of the less glamorous realities of becoming a global sports superstar.

Mbappé isn’t just one of the most recognizable soccer players in the world — he’s also an extremely wealthy public figure whose movements and lifestyle are constantly visible.

That combination can unfortunately make athletes attractive targets for criminals.

The good news is that, based on the reporting currently available, Mbappé appears to have avoided becoming a victim of this alleged plot.

The bad news?

Somebody apparently looked at Kylian Mbappé and thought:

“Yeah, let’s kidnap that guy.”

Probably not the smartest defensive strategy ever devised.

The Bottom Line

What we know:

  • An 18-year-old suspect, Clément L., is under investigation in France.
  • Authorities believe he was connected to a series of robberies, attacks and alleged kidnapping plans.
  • Investigators reportedly discovered a list containing 26 potential targets.
  • Kylian Mbappé was reportedly one of those targets.
  • The group allegedly viewed Mbappé as a particularly wealthy target.
  • There is no evidence Mbappé was actually kidnapped or that an attempt was successfully carried out against him.
  • The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have not been proven in court.

For now, this isn’t the story of Kylian Mbappé escaping a kidnapping.

It’s the story of authorities allegedly uncovering a criminal operation before one of its most famous potential targets became a victim.
