The Houston Texans have decided to part ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson just weeks after adding him to their roster. Johnson played in only two games for the Texans before being cut, a move that reportedly stemmed from a heated locker room incident.
Locker Room Tirade Overshadows Playoff Win
According to ESPN, the decision to waive Johnson came shortly after his visible frustration in the Texans’ locker room following their wild-card playoff victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. While his teammates celebrated the hard-fought win, Johnson sat fully dressed at his locker, visibly upset over his lack of involvement in the game. The veteran wide receiver was targeted just once, resulting in a single 12-yard reception.
Running back Joe Mixon and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair reportedly attempted to console Johnson, but his dissatisfaction with his role on the team was evident. Sources indicate that Johnson’s frustration stemmed from unmet expectations about his playing time and target share.
Troubled Tenure Across Multiple Teams
Johnson’s short stint with the Texans marked the latest chapter in a turbulent season for the veteran wideout. Signed by Houston in late December, Johnson had already spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens earlier in 2024. Both teams ultimately decided to move on from him due to similar issues.
In Baltimore, Johnson’s tenure ended after just 39 snaps when he was suspended and later released for refusing to play in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to that, the Panthers traded him to the Ravens after a series of reported locker room conflicts. His tumultuous year follows a rocky exit from the Pittsburgh Steelers, where his dissatisfaction led to a mid-May trade to Carolina.
A Diminishing NFL Future
With four teams releasing him in an eight-month span, Johnson’s NFL future appears uncertain. His inability to integrate into multiple organizations, coupled with his repeated locker room issues, paints a bleak picture for the once-promising wide receiver.
Texans Focus on Divisional Round
As for the Texans, their focus now shifts to their upcoming divisional round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. With Johnson no longer on the roster, Houston aims to keep team chemistry intact as they continue their playoff run.
