Entering the game, the Wings were 2.5 goal favorites and were -238 on the moneyline. For those of you who don’t understand gambling terms, the Wings were heavy favorites in this game and should have beat the Riptide by 3 or more goals as they had in Week 1 when they played New York and beat them 13-10. This week could not have been any different than Week 1.
1st Quarter: Riptide went up 3-0 real quick, seemed like the Wings were playing a little too conservative and not taking many shots on goal. The Wings come storming back with a barrage of 3 goals in the last 4 minutes of period 1. Holden Cattoni, Mitch Jones and Taggart Clark make this a close game as the Wings trail the Riptide 4-3 after the first frame.
2nd Quarter: Mitch Jones ties up the game early in the 2nd quarter running down the middle of the field and burying one in the back of the net to tie up the game. Riptide get in 3 goals in a matter of just a few minutes making it 7-4. Riptide add another goal from Harvard grad, Austin Madronic in front of the net with 1:30 left in the half. Blaze Riorden answers right back and gets his first goal since being back from the IR as he gets a beautiful pass by Cattoni, it’s challenged by New York but in the end, was a confirmed goal with 45 seconds left in the half.
SOG: Wings 19 / Riptide 27
Score: Wings 5 / Riptide 8
3 goals Riptide scored came off penalties this half.
3rd Quarter: Riptide came out firing right away and put up another goal (Jeff Teat), 28 seconds into the 2nd half. Score is now 9-5. Another seemingly easy goal by Teat again, with very little defense in his face. Wings answer back right away with a beautiful behind the back no look pass from Mitch Jones to Holden Cattoni. 14 seconds later, Kearnan from the Riptide finds the back of the net. Taggart Clark answers back just as quickly as this barrage of goals is getting the crowd on their feet. Another goal for the Riptide from in front of the net making it now 12-7 New York. Taggart takes one all by himself moving down the middle of the field and ripping one to the back of the net. 13-8 Riptide lead after Q3.
4th Quarter: Wings down 5 goals, score is 13-8. Wings get another penalty (crosscheck) with 10:15 left to go. Riptide almost immediately score. This is where I started to make my way down to the post game press conferences.
Summary: The Wings rushed many of their advances taking shots 10 seconds into their possession. The defense is what really looked bad. They allowed the Riptide to score a season high in goals, not a great look from a team coming into the game with no wins. Whatever the Riptide wanted to do in front of the net, they did with little resistance from the Wings. Philadelphia was coming off a huge overtime victory the week prior to have a huge letdown this week at home. Mitch Jones continues to be the points leader on this team, totaling 5 points on Sunday while Taggart Clark completes a hat trick. Wings looks to get right at home next Saturday night against Saskatchewan.
